THE VOLCANO PROJECT: HOMESCHOOL SCIENCE HACKS

Hey guys Blazen Bros here and today we will be sharing with you our most recent homeschool science project. We have completed our volcano and it is awesome! This project was not that difficult at all. We needed simple supplies and we completed this project in three days. Our volcano was pretty big so that’s what took us so long. If your running a little short on time or you don’t want the project to take that long then we suggest that you make your volcano much smaller than ours. We wanted this to become a part of our room decor so we opted to amp it up! So if your ready to get started here’s what you’ll need.
Supplies:
  • newspaper
  • scissors
  • mod podge (original and waterproof)
  • masking tape
  • box
  • sturdy plastic bottle
  • cardboard for the foundation
  • paint (we used black, brown, red, glow in the dark yellow and orange)
  • baking soda
  • vinegar
  • measuring cup
  • food coloring
  • protection googgles
  • plastic gloves if necessary

LET’S BEGIN!
Step 1: To begin tape down the box to your cardboard foundation. Then you will need to tare your newspaper into balls and tape them to your box.
Step 2: Tape your sturdy plastic bottle to the top of the box in the center of the box.
Step 3: Next cut strips of newspaper.
Step 4: Pour your mod podge onto a plate on into a bowl. You will then dip your strips into the mod podge taking care not to let any drip. Be sure your using the original mod podge at this point. You will use the waterproof mod podge to seal the volcano at the end.
Step 5: Start layering your mod podge strips onto your model volcano.
Step 6: Once completely covered allow your mold to dry overnight. Be sure not to cover the opening of the plastic bottle, this is where we will put the vinegar and baking soda in for the lava eruption!
Step 7: Paint your volcano however you like. We started with the black, then brown, next we applied red, orange and yellow for contrast. Our neon glow in the dark paints were used at the end to ensure that the volcano would glow.
Step 8: Allow to dry overnight or for at least several hours until dry.
Step 9: Apply the waterproof mod podge to seal the volcano.
Once your volcano is sealed it is now ready to use! Let’s get started!
FOR THE ERUPTION/LAVA:
  • Use safety goggles
  • Pour one cup of baking soda into the volcano's mouth (the sturdy plastic bottle opening).
  • Next put 10-12 drops of red food coloring into the bottle.
  • Next add two cups of vinegar into the volcano.
HEY GUYS YOUR VOLCANO WILL ERUPT ONCE YOU PUT THE VINEGAR INTO THE VOLCANO SO LOOK OUT!

There you have an awesome volcano project that can be enjoyed more than once!
